Better Dreams II

Better Dreams II
Mixed Media on Board
10" x 10"
During second year Illustration some of us friends decided to do some illustration work outside of school. Some times school work would be so draining and dry, so we came together in a small collective to make things fun again. We wanted to have freedom and structure at the same time. So, "Better Dreams" as we have named it was born. I took the reigns on the first project, and now Dave has taken the liberty to overlook the second project. I'm glad we are continuing to do this. It makes me realize that there is artwork outside of school. For this project we were given a piece of instrumental music and asked to illustrate it. I found the music darker and less up beat, yet it also had confidence and grace. My process began as scribbles on bond paper, then moved onto a more refined drawing. The final is a mish-mash of media. I tried to explore textures and combinations of painting styles. I'm happy with the final product. The whole collection can be seen beginning Monday November, 5th in the Sheridan Student Hallway Gallery. I'm excited to see the rest of the pieces, and to see the public's reaction.

This is such a James Jean rip off, it's pretty disgusting. Being influenced is one thing but blatantly copying someone's style is a big no.

Sorry you feel that way. I do admire James' work. He is one of my favourite artists. I did try to emulate some of his media techniques from his Fables 50 Cover I believe, The Frog Prince. I was more or less experimenting with his media techniques, because I love his renderings. I have no intentions of "ripping off" his style. Personally for me, I try to emulate certain techniques I admire to progress my own style. I mean no disrespect in any way.
