Rectangle Spots?

I have temporarily conquered my slump in interpretive illustration class. Or am I actually beginning to understand visual language? I am happy with either. Our latest assignment was to illustrate four spot illustrations based on given facts. I was super excited to do this, and somehow my drawings came out as cartoons? I kept the media consistent with a combination of ink, watercolour, acrylic, gesso, and black and white chalk. Here are the facts in order of my spots:
  1. Chance a British youth reports having been bullied via text message: 1 and 7.
  2. Number of U.S. residents the FBI investigated last year using Patriot Act powers that waive the need for a warrant: 3,501.
  3. Percentage of children who by age seven have had at least one imaginary friend: 65%.
  4. Number of tunnels that have been discovered under the U.S./Mexican border since 2001: 34.

It's always harder to produce work conceptually. You have to consider media, composition, audience, universal symbols and cliches'. The class critique went well. Majority of the class was happy with my work. Thom agreed with many of my decisions. I'm proud of my process work because my ideas came a long way and in many respects actually transformed. Other than interpretive class, the week has gone well. I have been doing lots of life drawing lately and will post some of it soon. This weekend will be relaxing and I hope to do some people watching and fill up the rest of my sketchbook. I want to draw cows. I hope I somehow stumble upon some cows. Then the weekend would be perfect.
